Named for Brigadier General Edmund Hayes, a major benefactor of the University at Buffalo, Hayes Hall was once the county insane asylum and later its poor house. It thus marks an important era in the history of disability in Western New York. Today it houses the UB School of Architecture and Planning, and the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access.

A joint project of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and People Inc., a regional service provider to people with disabilities in Western New York, the Center for Disability Studies has both academic and community goals. It seeks to encourage and be a forum for academic research in the humanities and social sciences on disability, and to expand public awareness about disability for the sake of facilitating the integration of people with disabilities into the community.
